His ancestors were Russified immigrants from France; The real name of the artist sounded “Bryullo”. His grandson and father of the future painter Pavel Ivanovich was gifted with various talents, was engaged in wood carving and miniature painting.
Thanks to his successes, he was elected an academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and taught in the class of ornamental sculpture. Only with the highest permission of Emperor Alexander I, the Bryullo brothers changed the name of the ancestors and, adding to it the Russian ending “in” became the Bryullovs. Pavel Bryullov was married twice. All the sons of Pavel Ivanovich from his second marriage studied at the Academy of Arts, and their sister Julia married the famous watercolist Peter Fedorovich Sokolov.
The family was forced to leave the academic apartment, which was occupied by Pav-Self-portrait in the uniform of the academician. This happened because the father of the family received a warning about the dismissal from the Academy due to “low benefits” from the training of classes “The skill of the sentry and carved on the tree” and the need to close them. He resigned to Pavel Ivanovich and began to work on the design of the Kronstadt Church.
Karl grew up a very painful boy. Until five years, he was practically chained to bed, but despite this, his father early began to instill his son's skills necessary for his future profession. The child constantly painted the figures of people and animals in various, sometimes even very complex angles. These exercises made it possible to develop the eye, a sense of proportion and rhythm, as well as the skills of building a composition.
Gradually, his father began to attract Karl as an assistant, trying to educate him with hard work and professionalism. It should be noted that Peter Ivanovich was strict enough and demanding on his son. So, in childhood, for some misconduct, he received a strong slap in the face from the parent, as a result of which, for life, deaf to his left ear. At the Imperial Academy of Arts October, Karl, who has not yet reached the age of ten, has already been enrolled in the Imperial Academy of Arts for state -owned content.
Professor A. Ivanov, A. Egorov and V. became his mentors, the training was given to the boy easily, 3 Karl Pavlovich Bryullov the genius of art. The teachers expected from him “something unusual, and the pupils of the older ages indulged him for his talent .. From the second half of the academic course, the young man often helped his comrades. For a small 4pat board, he corrected other people's examination drawings at night and especially loved that he would read aloud during his work.
Grateful students were happy to meet, over time, drawing for reading became a habit that the artist has kept for life. The first significant creative success of the young painter was the performance of the program drawing “Genius of Art”-, the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. In the image of the genius of Bryullov, the Greek artists of the god Apollo, the patron saint of the arts, depicted Greek.
He sits in a free relaxed pose, holds a rod in one hand on which a laurel wreath hangs, and the other rests on a lyre, standing on the capitals of the Ionical Column. At the feet of the deity lies a fragment of the ancient sculptural group "Laocoon". For the greatest expressiveness, the author endowed his hero with large snow -white wings. Creating this work, he followed strict academic requirements, so the drawing was highly appreciated by the Academic Council and was recognized as a model for copying.
In Karl, he performed one of his best student paintings - “Narcissus looking into the water”, the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, in which he demonstrated the perfection of skill. The hero of the picture is the beautiful Narcissus, the son of the nymph Lariopa and the god Kefiss according to another version of Selena and Endimion, who was so fascinated by his reflection in the water that he died of love for himself.
Working on this work, the artist collected a lot of preparatory material and, in order to achieve maximum expressiveness, created several field studies in the Stroganovsky park. In the canvas, the plastic is convincingly transmitted narcissus, looking into the water. The work was highly appreciated by professors and recognized as the best picture of Bryullov. Ivanov bought this canvas for his collection.
It adorned the walls of his workshop for more than twenty years until it was bought out and entered into the collection of the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Literally two years after the creation of the Narcissus looking into the water, Bryullov wrote the graduation work “The appearance of Abraham of three angels at the oak of the Mamvriyskoye”, the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, for which he received a large gold medal and the right to a pensioner trip abroad.
For the entire twelve -year period of his training, he was awarded all possible awards and rewards at the Academy. According to a friend A. Fomin, on the day of graduation, Karl carried out several handfuls of gold and silver medals from the assembly hall. But the circumstances developed in such a way that Bryullov was forced to stay at the Academy for another 5 Karl Pavlovich Bryullov.
President of the institution A. Olenin appointed him to the mentors of A. Ermolaev, an artist little gifted and did not have any authority among students. Bryullov immediately wrote a petition in which he insisted that G. Ugryumov, one of the most famous painters in the country, was appointed his teacher. The request was not satisfied, which served as the reason for his angry abandonment of the honored pensioner foreign trip.
In the life of the young Bryullov, a new and difficult stage began. It was founded by philanthropists such as I. Gagarin, P. Kikin, A. Dmitriev-Mamonov and others. By releasing art publications, organizing exhibitions, 6 supporting young artists with the help of orders, OPX of the main goal set to spread works of art to the masses. Society also helped especially gifted painters, sculptors and architects to improve their skill abroad, paying for their trips.
Thanks to a successful coincidence, OPH turned its attention to Bryullov. To verify the outstanding abilities of a young painter, he was offered to perform several paintings on given software topics. The artist wrote the canvases “Oedipus and Antigon”, the Tyumen Museum of Local Lore and the “Polnik’s repentance” is unknown, which were very highly appreciated by the founders of the society.
All doubts immediately scattered - Karl Bryullov received the right to continue further improvement of his talent abroad. At his request, brother Alexander could go with him. The brothers hit the road on August 16, the road to Italy was leisurely and almost great artists lasted a year. Bryullovs made detailed reports in OPX about all their impressions. In Italy May, they arrived in Rome, which struck Karl to the core.
Architecture, painting, sculpture- everything that the eye of the young Hu-Italian morning fell on. This work on which he worked for about three years has become the last student work. He managed to achieve extraordinary accuracy in the transfer of 7 Karl Pavlovich Bryullov Erminium in the shepherds. Literally from the very beginning of his stay in Italy, the master became interested in genre painting, capturing the plots from the life of ordinary Italians.
The first attempt to comprehend the surrounding reality was the painting “Italian Morning”, Kunsthalle, Kil, which depicts the moment of the morning toilet, performed by a very young Italian. The girl is captured in a secluded corner of the garden near a small fountain. Having substituted palms under a cold stream, she waits for a sufficient amount of water to pour in them.
Her back is lit by sunlight, and her face is reflected from the fountain with reflexes. The naturalness of the moment, gestures and plastics, a meticulous study of nature - everything speaks of the realistic search for the master. The most remarkable canvas for religious and historical plots is the unfinished work of “Erminia by the shepherds”, the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, created under the impression of Torkvato Tasso “Liberated Jerusalem” and telling about the first crusade.
The artist presented a meeting of shepherds described in the seventh-8 scene of this literary work with the sounds attracted by the sounds of Erminia, the daughter of Tsar Saracens Antiochus. The canvas has a convincing realistic interpretation of images. The naturalness and liveliness of the Pastukhi poses, conveniently located on the edge of the forest, perfectly conveyed genuine surprise from the princess that appeared in front of them speaks of a close study by the artist of nature.
And only in the figure of Erminia can some statue of the posture and sculptural interpretation of the folds of clothing be noted, which is related by the work with the earlier Academic works of Bryullov. As in the Narcissus looking into the water, an important place in the new work belongs to the landscape. Clarity, simplicity, special expressiveness in the construction of the composition, a rich color - these are its last achievements.
When the painting "Italian morning" was completed, Bryullov sent her to Russia. In St. Petersburg, she was very warmly met by contemporaries and struck them with the freshness of the letter and the original interpretation of the plot. The Society for the Promotion of Artists presented the work to the emperor. Nikolai Pavlovich immediately granted Bryullov a diamond ring and instructed to write a paired picture to him.
Great artists Italian afternoon Italian, taking off grapes. The heroine of the canvas is a simple Italian girl collecting ripe grape clusters in the garden. The compositional construction is simplicity and laconicism. Italian, the staircase on which she stands, and the grape vine - everything is permeated with the rays of the midday sun. The creation of the painting “Girl collecting grapes in the vicinity of Naples”, the State Russian Museum, St.
Petersburg, dates back to the same year. In it, as in the previous work, the theme of the joyful course of measured life sounds. In the center of the canvas is a young lady who collects from the vine, the sun -poured grape brushes. Rising to socks, she gracefully deviated back to tear off the bunch of a bunch hanging in the distance from her. Her friend, lying nearby on the steps, holds a tambourine in her hands and as if accompanies the elegant movements of her companion.
On the upper step of the stairs is a little boy caring a large bottle of wine. When constructing the composition, the artist repeated the motive of the circle several times: a watermelon, a tambourine, a pole of luggage lying on a donkey, a bottom of a bottle, a basket of grapes hanging on the hand of the main character - all this is called to remind the viewer in the motive of the cyclicity and uniformity of peasant life.
