The family of Nicholas was the captain of the navy, the mother worked as a fish master. Childhood-Youth in North-Evensk, Nikolai and his family lived up to eight years old, and in the second grade went already in Magadan, where his parents moved. In adolescence, he began to get involved in music-from the ninth grade, Smolin played on drums in a school vocal and instrumental ensemble.

In the year, Nikolai moved to Khabarovsk and graduated from the Art School of Arts there. At the same time, he began to play in restaurant ensembles. After graduating from the educational institution, he moved to Moscow. In the capital, the artist continued his career as a restaurant musician and was engaged in this quite successfully almost the entire eighties. Creativity at the end of X with the liberalization of the economic policy of the state Nikolai went into individual entrepreneurs.

The business developed successfully: Smolin created the company Petroshop - a network of salons for the sale of musical instruments and equipment, as well as a music studio. In years, Nikolai returned to the music and began to record songs at his own studio. However, he did it more for himself: he was not going to go out to the public, as well as to spread ready -made tracks.

However, some compositions in his performance - in particular, the “bells” of Alexei Garnizov to the verses of Ilya Reznik - unexpectedly for the artist diverged on the cassettes, as in the days of underground recording. Some popularity came to Nikolai Smolin, although many still did not know his name and attributed the performance of these songs to other artists.
